Article I: Name
Section 1. The name of this organization will be University Ballet.
Article II: Purpose
Section 1. The purpose of University Ballet is to provide open, classical ballet classes and classical ballet teaching and performance opportunities on-campus at the University. University Ballet strives to create a supportive and inclusive environment, fostering the love and enjoyment of ballet for all members.
Article III: Field of Membership
Section 1. Membership is open to anyone wishing to pursue ballet training. Voting membership is limited to currently registered University of Chicago students.
Section 2. University Ballet classes are open to anyone, anytime. Though regular attendance at class is recommended, it is not required for membership in University Ballet. In order to perform, members must attend a minimum of one ballet class per week.
Article IV: Officers
Section 1. The officers will be Executive Director, Assistant Director, Artistic Director, Director of Finance, Head of Teaching, Head of Public Relations, Production Manager, Costumer, and Fundraising Chair.
Section 2. All officers must be active participants in University Ballet. Officers must be currently enrolled students at the University of Chicago.
Section 3. Each term of office will last one year.

Section 4. The duties of the officers are as follows:

  • Executive Director: Oversees other positions. Makes sure that we remain an RSO, corresponds with the administrative staff and our advisors, attends room lotteries, runs meetings, and organizes scheduling. Replies to questions about UB.

  • Assistant Director: Social chair. Picks up jobs the other directors can’t do alone. Coordinates with all directors when appropriate. Takes minutes at EC meetings.

  • Artistic Director: Plans performances. Coordinates and assigns choreography and choreographers / rehearsal directors. Makes sure that everyone has an appropriate role and that the auditions are run appropriately. Makes sure that shows are cohesive and excellent. Responds to artistic questions about UB.

  • Director of Finance: Tracks University Ballet’s ORCSA account and manages budgets. In charge of reimbursements and costume orders when necessary. Applies for funding when necessary.

  • Head of Teaching: Schedules classes, teachers, and masterclasses. Runs teacher meetings and teacher workshops as necessary. Makes sure classes are at appropriate levels. Considers and auditions new teachers.

  • Head of Public Relations: Sends emails regarding events and scheduling. In charge of advertising, programs and tickets. Manages publicity through posters, fliers, and brochures, as well as delegating responsibility for the website and listhost. (There exists an optional second PR position of Webmaster.)

  • Production Manager: Runs shows. Makes sure that everything runs smoothly backstage and coordinates with stage manager and all technical assistants. Makes sure that the dance surface is where it needs to be. Steps up to aid other directors as necessary.

  • Costumer: Coordinates costumes. Manages costume closet.

  • Fundraising Chair: Coordinates fundraising, including garment sales and benefit.
Section 5. Elections will be held prior to eighth week of spring quarter each year. At the conclusion of spring quarter, power will be transferred to the new officers and their terms of office will begin. Following the elections, new officers should attend all executive committee meetings.

Section 6. Officers may be removed from office only by a majority vote by the other officers to do so.

Section 7. The executive committee is the democratic leadership of University Ballet, representative of all members. All executive committee meetings are open to all members, and everyone is encouraged to actively participate in the leadership of the company. Only casting meetings will be restricted to the EC, rehearsal directors and/or choreographers, and invited guests.

Article V: Elections
Section 1. Voting privileges are limited to currently registered U of C students who are members of University Ballet. Voting will be done by ballot, and must be done in person. Elections will be held at a designated meeting, which will be made known to all members prior to its occurrence.
Article VI: Handling of Funds
Section 1. All funds collected will be deposited in University Ballet's ORCSA account.
Section 2. The Director of Finance shall be the primary officer designated to handle organization of finances.
Article VII: Amendments
Section 1. Bylaws may be amended only by a majority vote by the officers.
Section 2. Advance notice of amendments will be given to ORCSA, as well as to all members of University Ballet.
